Here’s all you need to know about the upcoming OnePlus Open foldable phone

OnePlus Open

OnePlus Open news (Updated August 22)

OnePlus foldable phone is coming, And we can’t wait for it to arrive. OnePlus hasn’t made any foldable phone before, it will have the highest pixel density of its own series, but of all foldable smartphones that have launched in 2023 thus far. It is now tipped to beat even the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 in this segment, even though it will also be a larger device in size.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5’s Foldable Dynamic AMOLED 2X display stretches a 1812×2176 resolution across 7.6 inches for a pixel-per-inch (PPI) rating of ~373. However, OnePlus will upgrade the “Open” to a 7.82-inch main display a resolution of 2268×2440, for a PPI of ~426.

OnePlus Open models and design

New images shared by On Leaks and Smart Prix show some noticeable differences from the OnePlus Open design renders leaked previously. The images show a significantly larger circular rear camera module placed centrally on the upper side of the back panel. When compared to previous leaks, it also appears that OnePlus is likely to launch its foldable with a wider display.

The new renders of the OnePlus Open flaunt rounded corners and slimmer bezels as compared to the initial designs. The handset is seen with a flat outer frame with rounded corners. Moreover, the large circular rear camera module on the OnePlus Open also appears to be slightly more lifted as compared to earlier design leaks.

OnePlus Open Cameras

According to the latest rumours, the OnePlus Open will come equipped with a mighty camera setup on the back, consisting of three cameras. Judging by the renders the cameras will be housed in a circular bump on the back of the phone.

The Resolution of the cameras still a huge question mark, but again, according to industry insiders and leaks, we’re looking at a 48MP wide-angle camera, a 48MP ultra-wide snapper, and finally, a 64MP telephoto lens. The specs of the three sensors and lenses above them remain unknown at the moment. The one thing we know is that OnePlus will extend and use its partnership with Hasselblad for the OnePlus Open.

Talking about the selfie camera, we’re expecting two of those, an external 32MP camera and an internal 20MP one. We don’t think OnePlus will try an Under Display Camera for its first foldable, but that remains to be seen.

OnePlus Open Specs

The OnePlus Open is shaping up to be a complete flagship. It is said to feature a 7.8-inch 2K AMOLED display on the inside, with a 6.3-inch AMOLED flanking the front. Both displays are expected to support a 120Hz refresh rate, though there could be differences in their minimum refresh rates if the LTPO tech differs.

The performance is said to be handled by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC and sizeable 16GB RAM. The specs leak only mentions 512GB of internal storage, but we could also see other storage tiers. A 4,800mAh battery may be on board with 67W fast charging. The report doesn’t mention wireless charging, though we cannot rule out the feature until the phone launches.

In the camera department, we might see a 48MP primary sensor, a 48MP ultrawide sensor, and a 64MP telephoto camera sensor. The cover screen could feature a 32MP shooter for selfies, and the inside screen could get a 20MP selfie snapper.

The phone will likely ship with Android 13-based Oxygen OS 13.1, but it should be a prime candidate to get Android 14 once the software goes stable. However, a leak on July 7 points to the software being called Oxygen OS.

The latest report from GSMArena indicates that the OnePlus Open may be pushed back even further. Originally thought to be revealed on August 29 by leaker Max Jambor, it seems that an issue with the screens is the reason for the delay. A new date is not yet known, but should be “soon.”

It feels safe to assume that the OnePlus Open will cost at least $1,000, but it’ll likely cost a bit more than that. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Google Pixel Fold both cost $1,800 and — while not sold in the U.S. — the Oppo Find N2 costs about $1,120. Based on the most popular foldable competition, there’s a wide range for the OnePlus Open to fall into if OnePlus is looking to be competitive with its pricing.
